Indonesia, 1946: Johan (Martijn Lakemeier) is a young Dutch soldier who, together with more than a hundred thousand others, is sent to put things in order in the Dutch East Indies during the Indonesian war of independence. Gradually he falls under the spell of the charismatic army captain Westerling, nicknamed The Turk (Marwan Kenzari). When the war escalates and The Turk resorts to more and more brutal ways to beat back the resistance of the population, growing more and more merciless with each step, the line between good and evil becomes increasingly blurred for Johan. The young man must make a choice…
