Description

Libertad (Nicolle Garcia), the rebellious 15-year-old daughter of Colombian housekeeper Rosana (Carol Hurtado), has, against her will, been brought over from her home in Colombia to stay with her mother and the family she cares for in a gorgeous Spanish seaside villa. Three generations of rich Spanish women—ageing grandmother Angela (Vicky Peña), her daughter Teresa (Nora Navas), and granddaughter Nora (María Morera), also 15 and very sheltered—rule the roost here, and it’s Nora’s tentative friendship with Libertad that forms the core of this very beautiful and very well-directed feature debut from Clara Roquet.

‘Roquet’s filmmaking is light of touch and instinctively perceptive, honing in on the tiny details which are magnified through the lens of adolescence. There’s a kinship with the work of Céline Sciamma, in the way that the film effortlessly navigates the mess of teen female dynamics; and with Lucrecia Martel, in the way that class seeps into every interaction.’—Wendy Ide, Screen
