Description

Tegendraads is a new Dutch film directed by Ben Sombogaart, known for earlier successes such as Twin Sisters (De Tweeling) and In My Father's Garden (Knielen op een Bed Violen). The film is set in the sleepy town of Oldenzaal in 1961. The arrival of a large group of Italian workers, called in to support the rapidly growing textile industry, shakes up the community. While the Italians work hard and steal the hearts of the local Twentse girls, young laborer Johanna seeks freedom and fights to rise above societal constraints.

The growing tensions between the Twentse locals and the newcomers ultimately culminate in the historic "Spaghetti Riots" of 1961, with Johanna and her newfound love Francesco caught at the center of the storm.
