New York-based poet Ocho (Juan Barberini), newly arrived in Barcelona, picks up handsome TV director Javi (Ramon Pujol). While enjoying a little post-hookup wine, Javi drops a bombshell: they have met before. And BAM!—director Lucio Castro cuts to 20 years before, when both men were closeted and in heterosexual relationships. As the two younger men negotiate their way out of the closet, Castro crafts a delicate, emotionally satisfying, and deeply felt about possibilities and fate. It is a lovely debut for the director that marks him as a vital new voice in Argentinean cinema.
‘Like Sliding Doors with added subtlety and soul, this swooning love story spins the idea of “what if?” into something deeply romantic… A beautifully crafted love story, End of the Century has two understated, thoughtful performances at its heart. It explores its existential themes—of the passing of time and of roads not taken—with delicacy and deftness. It’s a road worth travelling.’—Hanna Flint, Time Out
