Description

In Sight & Sound’s 2022 decennial poll on history’s greatest films, published every ten years since 1952, 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators, archivists, and academics from around the world voted Yasujirō Ozu’s timeless, deeply moving masterpiece Tokyo Story as the fourth greatest film in cinema history (the directors’ poll ranked it #1). The story is simplicity itself: an ageing couple (Ozu regular Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama) travel to Tokyo to visit their children, only to find that they are seen as more of a nuisance than welcome family... ‘A brilliant film on generational change, a society in transition and what it means to feel you are no longer needed.’ – Maria Delgado, Sight & Sound
