About Carrie
Carrie received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the best films of 1976, having since become a horror classic. It’s not only frightening but has also had a major influence on the genre and the films we see today. The themes it explores, such as bullying and feminism, are just as relevant now as they were in 1976.
The shy and sensitive teenager Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is weighed down by bullying from her classmates at school, while at home, she is dominated by her extremely religious mother (Piper Laurie). A series of strange events lead her to suspect she may have supernatural powers. When Tommy Ross (William Katt), a sympathetic boy, invites her to the prom, things take a dark and violent turn.
The film is based on Stephen King's first published story from 1974. In the original version of the script, writer Lawrence D. Cohen stayed true to the original story. However, Brian De Palma decided to abandon this approach and tell Carrie’s story in a completely linear fashion.
Brian De Palma is one of Hollywood’s greatest stylists from the '70s through the '90s. With Carrie, he introduced John Travolta and demonstrated his unique eye for blending editing, music, and sound effects (thanks to Hitchcock) with exceptional camerawork.
The screening will have Dutch subtitles.
