Description

Not exactly—in fact, far from it—hardened human traffickers, Sang-hyeon (Song Kang-ho, the marvellous patriarch in ‘Parasite’) and Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won) make decent money
stealing abandoned babies from a church’s ‘baby box’ and putting them up for adoption in
good homes. When mother So-young (Lee Ji-eun) reconsiders her decision to give up her
baby, she discovers the two men and their illegal practice. Overwhelmed by feelings of both
maternal love and despair, she decides to help find suitable parents for her child.
Meanwhile, detectives Soo-jin (the great Doona Bae from ‘Sense8’ and ‘Stranger’) and Lee
are hot on their heels…
‘Nobody makes films about families quite like Hirokazu Kore-eda, whether they are
biological families or makeshift groups thrown together by circumstance and need. Four
years after one of the Japanese writer-director’s best, Palme d’Or winner “Shoplifters,”
about a rag-tag bunch of petty thieves, he returns… with another assembly of law-breaking
misfits from society’s margins… Every one of the key cast makes an indelible impression,
right down to the adorable baby boy who’s the story’s catalyst.’—David Rooney, The
