In Rome in the 1970s, new neighbourhoods are under construction, TV programs are still in sober black and white, and social relations in Italy are at a tipping point. Clara (Spanish superstar Penélope Cruz) and Felice (Vincenzo Amato) have just moved into a new apartment with their three children. The marriage is over, but divorce is unthinkable. Clara projects all her dreams of freedom onto the children. Adriana (Luana Giuliani), their 12-year-old daughter, has to watch as her mother's state of mind causes tensions between her parents to grow. Adriana struggles with her identity, and in her dogged pursuit of convincing everyone that she is a boy, the family's already fragile balance is pushed to a breaking point…
