To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Wim Wenders winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Paris, Texas, we’ll be screening this classic – in a stunning new 4K restoration – on November 21 at Cinecitta as part of our immersive film classic series. This timeless masterpiece by Wim Wenders, featuring a beautiful score by Ry Cooder, tells the dramatic story of a man who lost everything and is striving to make amends.
About Paris, Texas
Paris, Texas is a beautifully acted and filmed road movie in which Travis Henderson (Harry Dean Stanton, whose face alone is a landscape) returns from the desert after four years of absence to find his eight-year-old son Hunter, and together they set off to search for Jane, Travis’s young wife (Nastassja Kinski). Their journey takes them past gas stations, motels, and small towns along the highway, where Travis and Hunter get to know each other “on the road,” determined to find their share of the happiness promised by the American Dream.
Director Wenders remarked, “We simply set out and observed—like Travis, who starts walking, waiting until he meets someone. Just observing, without seeking out familiar film images.” The visuals captured by Robby Müller are stunning. Wenders received a BAFTA and a Palme d’Or, among other awards, for his film.
