Her longterm partner Barby having died of cancer, forty-ish Julia (Carla Crespo) faces three huge problems while dealing with her grief: raising Barby’s biological son León, 13, whom Julia has cared for as a mother since the boy’s infancy; dealing with León’s biological grandmother (Barby’s mom) – who quickly accelerates her grandmotherly role – while also coming to terms with the return of León’s long-absent father; and keeping afloat the laid-back restaurant that she and Barby have painstakingly built together.
What directors Andi Nachon and Papu Curotto do with this situation goes against narrative expectations derived from Hollywood fare and more melodramatic films – to say too much would be to spoil the unfolding humanist drama, but we can say that we’ve rarely seen a film dealing with grief that is as honest, heartfelt, warm, and yet totally unsentimental as this one. Carla Crespo shines in the role of Julia, and the ending is nothing short of lovely.
