At the end of the 19th century, Empress Elisabeth (Susanne Wolff) of Austria-Hungary – better known as Sisi – lives in an aristocratic female commune in Greece. Countess Irma (Sandra Hüller) is sent as a companion to Sisi and immediately becomes fascinated by the excentric and extravagant hermit. But the outside world tries to break Sisi. However fiercely Irma and Sisi resist, in the end there seems to be only one fateful path left that will link the two women together forever…
