About this movie
Sexual identity and family are complicated by the laws of desire in Simone Godano’s comedy, set in sunny Gaeta on the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Rome. Carlo (Alessandro Gassmann), 50, is an upstanding and forthright father who just happens to be in love with 60-year-old Tony (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), a rich and spoiled art dealer. The two decide to bring their families together for a summer holiday and come out of the closet by announcing their intention to marry. To say that this does not exactly go over very well with some of their adult children is to put it mildly… The drollery suggested by the English title for this confection—An Almost Ordinary Summer—is fully on display, and, as Tony and Carlo set out to win the hearts and minds of their families, it becomes obvious that the English title is also a colossal understatement…
