Archaeologist Alma (Maren Eggert, Silver Bear-winner for Best Acting Performance at the 2021 Berlinale) works at Berlin’s famed Pergamon Museum. In order to receive some extra funding, she agrees to take part in a strange study wherein she will live with Tom (Dan Stevens, from ‘Downton Abbey’), a handsome robot, whose AI system has been programmed to learn and adjust, based on Alma’s needs and desires. Needless to say, this situation is ripe for comedy, and director Maria Schrader takes full advantage of the possibilities. What is surprising, however, is how profoundly the film explores loneliness, desire, and the plight of the professional (and single) woman. Don’t be surprised if you’re rooting for the couple by film’s end…
