2001: A Space Odyssey | Thursday, March 21 | Doors open at 8:15 PM | Film starts at 9:00 PM
Without a doubt, 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. The special effects, for which Stanley Kubrick won his only Oscar, are still phenomenal. It’s a film that is more relevant today than ever before.
With 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick shook storytelling formulas for major Hollywood films, catapulted futuristic visual effects into the present, and forever linked the fanfare of Strauss’ ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ with the emptiness of space.
The film takes viewers on a hallucinatory journey through time and space, starting with the discovery of a black monolith on the moon in 2001, then back to the dawn of humanity four million years ago, before hurtling forward to a future time. Meanwhile, Earth’s inhabitants experiment with artificial intelligence and embark on ambitious space missions. During one such journey, supervised by the computer Hal-9000, Hal begins to exhibit human-like traits. Intentionally, it seems he wants to sabotage the mission. The question is: why?
Film scholar Rudi de Boer will introduce the film using visual fragments.
