Description

At a time when fake news and lies are undermining the fabric of our society, sceptical priest Filippo (rising Italian star Michele Riondino) is sent by the Vatican to investigate an alleged miracle. A video of a crying statue of the Virgin Mary has gone viral and Filippo, known worldwide for debunking alleged miracles, comes to the Dutch border community of Limburg, which is in the grip of a collective trauma that unfolded four years ago. Térèse (19), the daughter of the owners of the crying sculpture, is an elusive, silent young woman, who has not spoken since 'the black day' and who sees the arrival of Filippo as a sign from above. She and her manipulative mother prove worthy adversaries for Filippo. He is used to interrogating people and doing forensics, but his technocratic approach clashes with the deep sorrow of the people of the village. In addition, he is attracted to the mysterious Térèse. As he gets closer to solving the case, he becomes further entangled in the village's grief and a series of seemingly miraculous events that shatter his certainties about his vocation as a priest and as a human being
