Description

November 1944. On the Walcheren peninsula in the Dutch province of Zeeland, tens of thousands of Allies and Germans do battle. A young Dutchman (Gijs Blom) who fights for the Germans, a lost English glider pilot (Jamie Flatters), and a young Dutch woman (Susan Radder) involved in the Dutch Resistance cross paths. All three are faced with crucial choices regarding their own and other people's freedom and survival. Central to the film is the ‘The Battle of the Scheldt’, which took place in the autumn of 1944 in Zeeland and West Brabant, and in which more than 10,000 people lost their lives. This battle, which was decisive in the course of WWII and is known as one of the most important and fierce battles in Western Europe, secured supply lines for the Allied forces’ push to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. Yet little attention has been paid to it over the years. This epic film—which represents Netflix’s first foray into Dutch filmmaking—was shot on location and directed with flair by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. It will certainly bring to light an important and little discussed aspect of WWII history
