1930s, Denmark: young and, yes, unruly, Maren (a brilliant Emilie Kroyer Koppel) is seen by the government as dissolute and ill-mannered. Fearing that her behaviour will affect others, she is sent to a women's institution on the island of Sprogø. There she is supposed to learn to behave like a respectable lady. She shares her room with Sørine, who has already been squeezed into a straitjacket. But Maren has no intention of complying with the rules—and she suffers all the consequences that decision entails…

‘Anger courses through every scene of “Unruly,” the superb second feature from Danish director Malou Reymann (“A Perfectly Normal Family”)… Anti-authoritarian landmarks such as “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” are obvious antecedents, but the chillingly matter-of-fact tone gives this film its own special power, raging at a patriarchal society with eloquently controlled fury.’—Tim Grierson, Screen
