Description

Director Phyllida Lloyd (‘The Iron Lady’, the ‘Mamma Mia!’ franchise) takes a script co-written by superb lead actor Clare Dunne and gives us what at first appears to be a story of domestic abuse as Sandra (Dunne), mother of two daughters, suffers at the hands of her violent husband, Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson). But it soon morphs into something much more positive and empowering, as Sandra, having quit Gary for good, begins to rebuild her life—and begins the process of building her own home on a small piece of land donated by her employer (Harriet Walter)…

‘A rousing story that never shies away from the hard truths of abuse… Lloyd takes a stealth approach to building [the film’s] poignancy, drawing her audience in with a gentle hand before swinging the lens back on them… And Dunne herself is incredible in the way she funnels that bristling sense of injustice into her performance, as Sandra’s soft, pain-flecked voice rises and falls with the strength of her conviction.’—Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent
