Director Lisa Cortés enriches music history with a wealth of rarely seen archive footage of Richard Wayne Penniman aka Little Richard. Known for the hits ‘Tutti Frutti’, ‘Long Tall Sally’, ‘Lucille’ and ‘Good Golley Miss Molly’. Among the gems are images of his black and queer predecessors and contemporaries, such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
In Little Richard: I Am Everything, Cortés depicts the tortuous life journey of Penniman, a revolutionary who did not look away from the taboos of his time, racism and sexuality. This ode to Little Richard creating an art form of ultimate self-expression reminds us how eccentrics and misfits can have a power that, given the chance, unlocks new worlds where we can all be ourselves.
