Description

In the France of 1789, revolution is in the air—and so are the delightful aromas coming from the cooking of Pierre Manceron (Grégory Gadebois), chef to the Duke of Chamfort (Benjamin Lavernhe). When Manceron’s increasingly adventurous dishes lead to the Duke being humiliated by his fellow aristocrats at a dinner party, Manceron is fired. With nothing to lose, and in the company of an apprentice (Isabelle Carré), Manceron does the previously unthinkable: he invents the concept of the restaurant… Eric Besnard’s sumptuous period piece captures the revolutionary spirit of the times and celebrates the democratization of haute cuisine with gusto. Don’t see this film on an empty stomach!!

‘This is a movie simultaneously about finding your calling, moving out of the past, and, more specifically, the democratization of proper, well-prepared food as it transcends past the aristocracy to the working class… It’s full of wonderful production and costume design, as well as plenty of thoughtfully composed frames from cinematographer Jean-Marie Dreujou… [It delivers] the gentle nourishment of a thoughtfully cooked dinner to share with a loved one.’—Trace Sauveur, Austin Chronicle
