About the movie The New Year That Never Came
Romania, December 20, 1989: a country on the eve of revolution. Outside, large-scale demonstrations are taking place, but news of them is scarce. At the same time, President Ceaușescu is being glorified on New Year’s TV shows. While he ushers in the Christmas festivities, families struggle with their personal conflicts inside their homes, closely watched by the ever-present secret police. On this turbulent day, six lives intersect. Without knowing what lies ahead, an explosive event brings them together; one that will shape their future forever. The New Year that Never Came is a sharp tragicomedy that shows how little was needed to topple Ceaușescu’s communist regime. With humor and stylistic images, director Bogdan Mureșanu shows a crucial moment in Romanian history through the eyes of six ordinary people. The New Year that Never Came was one of the major prize winners at the Venice Film Festival and became the biggest box office hit of 2024 in its home country.
About the movie Memorias De Un Cuerpo Que Arde
Envisioned as the conversation with her grandmother that she never had, writer-director Antonella Sudasassi Furniss’s striking and cleverly constructed second feature gives voice to three women – Ana, Patricia, and Mayela – who were raised in a repressive era when sexuality was taboo. Their understanding of womanhood had been based on unspoken rules and implicit impositions from a dominant patriarchal perspective. Now, their fearless voices incarnate in a single 65-year-old woman (the wonderful Sol Carballo), who revisits a kaleidoscopic life of intertwined memories, secrets, and hidden desires.
‘The stifling taboos around female sexuality, love and desire are recalled with admirable candour in a film that poignantly balances insight, humour and heartfelt emotion… Sol Carballo is perfectly cast as the lead character. She exudes a serenity and wisdom that make her the calm centre of the story… Memories of a Burning Body… conveys some home truths that will be recognised the world over.’ — Allan Hunter, Screen. Winner, Panorama Audience Award, Berlin International Film Festival.
